World Marine Protected Areas Day

 

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are not just boundaries marked on a map. They are safe ecosystems that provide marine organisms to live, grow, and reproduce. It allows damaged ecosystems to recover naturally. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in conserving the world’s the marine biodiversity and natural resources for future generations.

To raise global awareness about the importance of Marine Protected Areas and the ocean conservation, World Marine Protected Areas Day is celebrated every year on August 1st.

Sri Lanka also provides shelter to several marine protected areas, including the "Hikkaduwa National Park", "Pigeon Island National Park", "Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary", and "Rumassala Marine Conservation Area". 

These protected areas are conserving our marine biodiversity, maintaining sustainable fish resources, and protecting delicate marine ecosystems.

A healthy ocean is the foundation of a living planet. Therefore, by conserving Marine Protected Areas, we are not only protecting the future of marine life but also safeguarding humans and maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.
