World Rivers Day 2026

 

Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September, World Rivers Day highlights the ecological, social, economic, and cultural importance of rivers. In 2026, it falls on 27 September.

The day originated from British Columbia Rivers Day, initiated by river conservationist Mark Angelo in Canada in 1980. It became a global celebration in 2005 in connection with the UN Water for Life Decade.

Rivers are more than channels of flowing water. They connect forests, wetlands, lakes, estuaries, and oceans, while supporting freshwater biodiversity and human communities.

Sri Lanka has 103 river basins, with major rivers including the Mahaweli, Kelani, Kalu, Gin, Nilwala, Walawe, Deduru Oya, Malwathu Oya, Gal Oya, and Maduru Oya. These rivers support agriculture, drinking water, hydropower, fisheries, biodiversity, and livelihoods. The Mahaweli River Basin, the country’s largest, covers approximately 16% of Sri Lanka’s land area.

However, our rivers face pressures from plastic pollution, wastewater, agricultural chemicals, sand mining, riverbank erosion, deforestation, watershed degradation, and climate change.

River conservation is therefore not only about cleaning rivers. It means protecting entire watersheds, biodiversity, communities, and the future of our water resources.

This World Rivers Day, let us protect our rivers, watersheds, and forests for generations to come.
