International Sawfish Day

“Protecting the ocean’s gentle giants today ensures the survival of an ancient living legacy for tomorrow.”

Today, October 17th, we observe International Sawfish Day. Distinctive for their long, tooth-lined rostra, sawfishes are among the ocean’s most iconic and fascinating creatures. Residing in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and river systems, these unique ray species play a vital role as apex predators, keeping marine food webs balanced and ecosystems healthy.

Unfortunately, these prehistoric marvels face an uncertain future. Overfishing, habitat loss, and entanglement in discarded fishing gear have driven all five species of sawfish to the brink of extinction. Because their saw-like snouts easily snag in nets, human activities have dramatically reduced their populations worldwide, making all the five species of sawfish as one of the most critically endangered families of marine species on the planet.

However, informed conservation efforts and collective action can rewrite their story. Here is how we can act to protect sawfishes:

⭕️Prevent Bycatch: Encourage and adopt sustainable fishing practices that reduce net entanglements and allow safe release.

⭕️Protect Coastal Habitats: Safeguard crucial mangrove forests, estuaries, and river mouths where sawfishes live and breed.

⭕️Support Conservation Research: Back marine research initiatives and report sawfish sightings to help scientists monitor populations.

⭕️Spread Awareness: Educate communities about the ecological importance of sawfishes to reduce illegal trade and hunting.

Let us unite to safeguard these extraordinary ocean legends through responsible actions. Together, we can ensure that the ancient saws continue to glide through our seas for generations to come.
