World Migratory Bird Day | 2026
World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated twice a year, on May 9 in the spring and October 10 in the fall in 2026. This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter,” reminds us that even small efforts, such as observing birds and recording information about them, can make a difference in protecting these amazing travellers.
Seven bird species have been selected as ambassadors for this year’s campaign: Cinnamon Teal, Merlin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Barn Swallow, American Oystercatcher, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, and Abdim’s Stork. These birds help highlight the importance of community participation in understanding and conserving migratory birds.
Bird migration is one of nature’s most fascinating journeys. More than 2,000 bird species travel thousands of kilometres in search of suitable places to feed, breed, and raise their young. Along the way, they play an important role in keeping ecosystems healthy by controlling insect populations, pollinating plants, and spreading seeds.
However, these incredible journeys are becoming more challenging due to climate change, habitat loss, plastic pollution, and other human activities. Protecting migratory birds is therefore not only a responsibility of conservationists but something we can all contribute to.
Interestingly, World Migratory Bird Day 2026 also marks the 60th anniversary of the International Waterbird Census, which helps monitor waterbird populations around the world and supports their conservation.
By observing birds, sharing our sightings, and protecting their habitats, we can help safeguard their future. After all, every bird matters, and every observation can contribute to a better understanding of their lives.
“Protect their wings, keep their journeys alive!”
